| nitter

The Battles of Zelenopillya: Part 1 of 2 – The Local Blind Spot
Bret Devereaux on nitter − This is actually a fair question. The short version is: the USA wrote the rules of the international system after WWII in ways that benefit us, including the average American.
Bret Devereaux on nitter − I am frustrated with the framing in this FP article (foreignpolicy.com/2023/11/16…) of Ukraine and Israel-Gaza as fronts US is engaged with as if we were fighting there. But the basic point, that we need to set priorities, is correct - and I think Israel is the clearly lower priority.

Daniel DePetris (@DanDePetris): "On democracy vs. autocracy: terrible organizing principle for explaining what is going on in the world today and elevates political ideology as the predominant mover-and-shaker of global events. It suggests, for instance, that Russia is fighting Ukraine because of its democracy (the @anneapplebaum thesis) when in reality it likely has more to do with balance-of-power considerations, Russia’s perceived security threats from Western institutions (like NATO) and Putin’s own infatuation with himself as a 21st Century Peter the Great. Plus, U.S. foreign policy itself totally undermines the democracy vs. autocracy thing given the extensive political and security ties the U.S. maintains with some of the worst autocracies on the planet (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Uganda, Chad, etc etc). This is one of the reasons why I think the Biden administration does itself no favors when it presses the d vs. a thesis in various speeches. It’s so obviously wrong and demonstrates a huge blind spot. The world laughs at it." | nitter
